At Lebanon Utilities safety is a top priority. Here you can find tips on electrical safety.
- Keep appliances away from bathtubs, puddles, sinks, and wet hands. Always unplug an appliance before cleaning. Even if turned off, it can shock.
- Never reach into water to get an appliance that has fallen in without first unplugging the appliance.
- Always dry your hands before touching electric appliances.
- Do not place electric cords under rugs or where they can be walked on or damage can go unnoticed.
- Check for cords that are frayed, damaged or tied in knots. Have them repaired or replaced.
- Use extension cords with three-pronged plugs for appliances that require grounding.
- Insert and remove plugs by grasping the plug. Pulling on the cord could damage it. Be careful not to let fingers touch the metal prongs.
- Never overload an outlet with multiple appliances.
- Put safety covers over unused electric outlets. This is particularly important if you have children in your home. Never let children play around outlets
- Keep electrical cords out of reach and out of sight to avoid children or pets.
- Don't hang clothes to dry on or near your heater, heating vent or hot plate.
- Avoid placing furniture and blankets close to heaters or hot plates.
- Use only appliances approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratory.
- Keep the floor around your washer and dryer clean and dry.
- Use power tools outdoors only in dry weather. Stand on dry surfaces and use only dry materials.
- Don't climb any tree or let children climb any tree that has power lines in or near it.

If you're planning to do any outdoor work, such as landscaping, installing a fence or excavating for construction, be sure to call before you dig. Lebanon Utilities is a member of the Indiana Underground Plant Protection Service.
Just call 1-800-382-5544 at least "2 Full Working Days" but not more than 20 calendar days prior to the start of your excavation and they will notify Lebanon Utilities.
Know where your home's main electric switch is, so you can turn off the electric supply to your entire home quickly in case of an emergency
